DETECTING THE IMAGE OF THE TEACHING PROFESSION ACCORDING TO SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS

Abstract
The value that society attaches to the teaching profession, the personal and professional qualities of teachers, the unique characteristics of the profession, and the news about teachers in the media portray a certain teacher profile in people's minds. This resulting profile represents a comprehensive image that represents not only an individual teacher, but all teachers practicing the profession. This image can have positive or negative aspects and is described as the society's "teacher image". Based on the importance of the subject, the Teaching Profession Image Scale, developed by Doğan (2018) to determine the image of the teaching profession, was applied to 164 school administrators in Gemlik district of Bursa. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that gender did not have a statistical effect on teachers' perception of their professional image. This finding is in line with some literature. However, it has been determined that the age factor is effective on teachers' perception of status; Teachers aged 24-36 received the highest scores. This shows that young teachers have a more positive view of the profession. On the other hand, it has been observed that factors such as professional characteristics, social perception, educational status and marital status do not have a statistical effect on the perception of professional image. The research results generally coincide with the existing literature. It is emphasized that support programs especially for young teachers should be developed and gender equality should be promoted. This study presents a cross-section, and it is stated that long-term studies can provide more in-depth information on this subject.
